Mike McKenna Jr. W/ Special Guests falllift

Mike McKenna Jr. plays The Carleton on Saturday, September 12, with special guest falllift. It's a double bill that brings together a Cape Breton singer-songwriter and a North Carolina indie-folk duo, and the night runs from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

McKenna is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Cape Breton Island, born in the coal-mining town of Glace Bay and raised along the Myra River in industrial East Cape Breton. His raspy, soulful voice blends indie, folk and Americana, and across four award-winning albums, including Smoky Mountain High, he draws on the stories of Nova Scotia's coastal, working-class communities. His 2020 record At The Edge of the World, produced by Victoria's Quinn Bachand, won the 2021 East Coast Music Award for Rising Star Recording of the Year and earned nominations at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and the Music Nova Scotia Awards; two songs from it were semi-finalists in the International Songwriting Competition. He's opened for artists like Feist and Bahamas.

Opening for him is falllift, a North Carolina indie-folk duo formed in 2021 by Micah Cottingham and William Steven Hall. Their sound blends folk, emo and indie rock, and they've drawn comparisons to Local Natives.

The show is at The Carleton, 1685 Argyle Street, from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Tickets are C$28.50, which is C$25 plus HST.
