Solo performance by Canadian singer-songwriter Lynn Miles at The Carleton, described as her Halifax songwriter's home.
Lynn Miles is back at The Carleton on Saturday, October 24, for a solo show. It's a return to a room she describes as her Halifax songwriter's home, and this time she's taking the stage on her own.
If you're not familiar with her, Miles is a JUNO Award winner from 2003 and a six-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner, including three for Songwriter of the Year. She's spent a good deal of her career writing for others, too: she was a staff songwriter for the Los Angeles-based Criterion Music, where she worked alongside Lyle Lovett, Rosanne Cash, and Rodney Crowell. That professional circle stretches far beyond the folk circuit, and she's performed in 17 countries. One of the more unusual chapters in her career saw her take music from The Lord of the Rings to the stage with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, performing alongside composer Howard Shore. She's also toured three times with Richard Thompson.
Her most recent record, TumbleWeedyWorld, is her sixteenth album and earned a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Album of the Year. On stage, she's a multi-instrumentalist who moves between acoustic and electric guitars, piano, harmonica, mandolin, and percussion, so a solo set usually means she's handling the arrangements herself. Beyond the performing, she's spent time mentoring songwriters at the Banff Centre and teaching songwriting at Carleton University in Ottawa.
