Concert by the Montreal-based world music duo Ikoum, featuring electric bass and harp, blending world jazz and poetic song with African, Eastern and Latin influences.
Ikoum play The Carleton in downtown Halifax on Sunday, September 6, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. It's a duo made up of bassist Just Wôan and harpist Kamila Nasr, and the set is built around the dialogue between those two instruments.
They're based in Montreal and describe their music as world jazz and poetic song, with African, Eastern and Latin influences. The singing is in Bafia, English and Dari, and the whole thing is held together by that electric bass and harp pairing. It's a sound that doesn't fit into one easy category, and reviewers have called them an innovative act bringing a sound you won't hear anywhere else in the city.
Just Wôan is a Cameroonian singer, bassist and multi-instrumentalist who has played the Montreux Jazz Festival, Blue Note Tokyo and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Kamila Nasr is a Canadian harpist, singer and multi-instrumentalist of Afghan heritage whose artistic life has taken her across Brazil, China and Canada, where she's performed with some of China's biggest rock and progressive rock artists. They describe their work as being driven by a shared curiosity for sonic exploration and cross-cultural exchange, weaving together language, heritage and experimentation.
