True Mountain Laurel is a brand-new West Coast duo made up of Haley Blais and Sam Lynch. They describe the project as having grown out of late-night harmonies, voice memos and friendship, and their debut, Angel So Bad, brings Sam's poetic introspection together with Haley's sharp lyrical intimacy. The songs are dust-swept folk-country, and they name Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams and early-2000s Canadian singer-songwriters as their touchstones. If those names ring a bell, you've got a good sense of where this sits: harmony-led, rooted in folk and country, and built around the songwriting.
Opening the bill is Peter Dreams, the new solo project of Peter Dreimanis of July Talk. It's a different side of things from the band, and as a solo outing it'll be his own material taking the lead. Between the two acts, the night moves from the folk-country of the duo to Dreimanis' solo work, with the Halifax Urban Folk Festival presenting the whole thing.
