First of Bells make their debut performance at The Carleton on Sunday 25 October, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The set is built around jazz interpretations of songs by iconic Cape Breton songwriters, so you'll hear familiar East Coast melodies reimagined through a jazz lens.
This isn't just a one-off gig; it's the culmination of a project over a year in the making. The band has spent that time working through the material, and they've chosen The Carleton for the project's first public outing. It's billed as their début performance, so this is the first time the work is being played live.
If you're from around here or have spent any time in the Maritimes, the songwriters they're drawing from will likely be familiar. The project takes those Cape Breton songs and puts them into a jazz setting, shifting the melodies and arrangements into a different musical language. It's a specific kind of crossover — Cape Breton songwriting meeting jazz — and this is the first time it's being brought to a stage.
