Toronto-based Caribbean jazz band CaneFire brings high-energy steelpan music to the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium.
CaneFire are playing the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Saturday 19 September, presented by DAC. They're a Toronto-based Caribbean jazz band, and the steelpan is right at the centre of what they do.
It's a specific kind of mix: Cuban rhythms, modern jazz virtuosity and the joy of the Caribbean, all built around that steelpan sound. The Vancouver Sun put it in a way that sums up the vibe: "If Dizzy Gillespie were still with us, he would love CaneFire." That gives you a good sense of where they sit — jazz with a strong Caribbean pulse, and a fair bit of energy behind it.
