Big Spruce Brewing and Tatamagouche Brewing Co. go head-to-head at The Carleton on Wednesday, August 26, for a craft draught showdown that's as much about the food as the beer. It's a five-course dinner put together by Chef Mathias Probst and his team, and the beer is the main event: each course comes paired with two 4 oz. pours, one from each brewery, chosen by the competing brewmasters. The brewmasters stay throughout the evening to chat, and the guests are the ones who decide whose pairings win.
It's a long night of eating and drinking, running from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, so you'll want to come hungry. With five courses and two beers per course, that's ten pours across the evening—enough to get a proper sense of how each brewery approaches pairing. The brewmasters being in the room is the best part; you can ask them why they picked a particular brew for a particular dish and hear the thinking behind it before you cast your vote.
The showdown is part of The Carleton's Jazz Fest programme, and seating is limited, so it's worth booking early if you're planning to go. The venue is well-known around the city for its music—it took home the 2024 ECMA award for Venue of the Year, following ECMA wins in 2018 and a Coast award in 2015. It's hosted a wide range of East Coast talent, from a JUNO kickoff party with Jim Cuddy, Jenn Grant and Rose Cousins to presenting Fleetwood Mac at BMO's 'A Different Stage of Mind: The Grand Finale', which raised C$65,600 for the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.
