A classical music concert featuring cellist Sung-Won Yang and pianist Enrico Pace, with works by Bach, Brahms, Debussy and Franck.
Sung-Won Yang and Enrico Pace are back in Halifax on Wednesday, September 23, at St. Andrew's United Church. The South Korean cellist and Italian pianist are returning to the city to open the season, and the programme they've put together covers a fair bit of ground. It runs from the clear lines and dialogue of the Bach sonatas through to the larger scale of Brahms's Sonata in E minor, with works by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Brahms, Debussy and Franck all making an appearance over the course of the evening.
It's a broad spread of repertoire for one night. You've got the two Bachs—the father and the son—which sets up a nice contrast between the Baroque and the more expressive, transitional style that came after. Then there's the weight of the Brahms sonata, and the later, more atmospheric writing of Debussy and Franck. Hearing them all in one sitting lets you trace a line from the 18th century right through to the early 20th, and the cellist and pianist are the only two on stage to carry it.
The evening is presented as part of Discover Halifax's Signature Music Events, which is why it's kicking off the season. If you've seen Yang and Pace perform together before, you'll know the dynamic they bring to a duo. If not, this is a good place to start: two musicians from different sides of the world coming back to the same city to open a new run of music.
