South Korean cellist Sung-Won Yang and Italian pianist Enrico Pace open the new season with works by Bach, Brahms, Debussy and Franck.
Sung-Won Yang and Enrico Pace open the new season at St. Andrew's United Church on Saturday 19 September. It's a cello and piano duo, with Yang on the cello and Pace on the piano, and they're kicking things off with a programme that pulls from four different composers: Bach, Brahms, Debussy and Franck.
That's a fair bit of ground to cover in one evening. You've got Bach, the bedrock of the whole tradition; Brahms, with his big, Romantic lines; Debussy, for the impressionist side of things; and Franck, whose work often sits somewhere in between. Hearing them all in one sitting lets you see how they talk to each other, and it's a good way to start a new season — a broad sweep rather than sticking to one corner of the repertoire.
Sung-Won Yang is a South Korean cellist, and Enrico Pace is an Italian pianist. They're the two names on the bill, and the focus is on Yang, so the cello takes the lead throughout. It's a chamber music setup — just the two of them on stage, no orchestra around them — which keeps the whole thing intimate.
