Award-winning Quebec jazz-fusion bassist Carl Mayotte performs with his quintet at The Carleton.
Carl Mayotte and his quintet play The Carleton in downtown Halifax on Sunday, November 8, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Mayotte is a Quebec bassist, composer, arranger and educator known for his virtuosity, rhythmic precision and groove, and he's one of the leading figures in contemporary jazz fusion in Quebec. He holds a Master's in Jazz Performance from McGill University.
He's coming off a busy few years. In 2022, he won the FĂ©lix Award for Jazz Album of the Year at ADISQ, and from 2020 to 2021, he was named Radio-Canada Jazz Revelation. He released the album Carnaval in the fall of 2023, and that same year put out The Ultimate Jazz Fusion Play-Along for Bass through Hudson Music. This past March, he released his fifth album, Claude, a tribute to the memory of his father.
He's not on his own for this one. The quintet puts together a full band around his bass: Stéphane Chamberland on drums, Gabriel Cyr on guitar, Francis Grégoire on keyboards and Damien-Jade Cyr on saxophones. Between the five of them, they've got the rhythm section, the harmonic weight and the lead voice all on one stage. They describe the sound as bringing that Quebec heat to the stage.
