Brìghde Chaimbeul

Brìghde Chaimbeul plays The Presbyterian Church of St. David on Friday 24 July, with the concert running from 8:00 to 9:30 PM. It's presented by Big Turnip Records and should last about an hour and a half.

Chaimbeul is a master of the Scottish smallpipes—the bellows-blown, mellower, and more emotive cousin to the Highland bagpipes—and she's taken them to the global stage. A native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Skye, she roots her music in her own language and culture. She first rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music and has since pushed the smallpipes into uncharted territory, devising a unique way of arranging pipe music that emphasises the instrument's rich textural drones and playing them with virtuosic liquidity.

Drawing on interconnected piping traditions, her most recent album brings in ambient, avant-garde and electronic influences. She's won a BBC Young Folk Award and a BBC Horizons Award, has been nominated for a SAY Award, and has collaborated with Caroline Polachek, Colin Stetson, Gruff Rhys and Aidan O'Rourke. The set will run for about an hour and a half, and the venue is at 1544 Grafton Street in Halifax.
