If you're looking for seeds or gardening supplies in Halifax, Halifax Seed Company has been around for a long time. It was founded in 1866 on the Halifax waterfront, and the company describes itself as the oldest continuously operating family-owned seed company in Canada. Fred Tregunno bought it in May 1925, and after his death in 1960 it passed to his sons, Warren and Paul. After the Halifax Explosion, the shop moved to Granville Street in 1917. In the late 1960s, it moved again to Agricola and Kane Streets, which is still the headquarters. Today it's run by the fourth generation, sisters Emily and Alison Tregunno, who became co-CEOs in 2023.

The seed selection covers vegetables, herbs and flowers. Some of the varieties listed include Bhut Jolokia peppers, Cherokee Carbon and Sunrise Bumblebee tomatoes, Fairytale pumpkins, Danvers carrots, French Breakfast radishes and Scarlet Runner beans. For flowers, you'll find Macarenia and Mazurkia zinnias, snapdragons, sweet peas, poppies and Sensation Mix cosmos. In autumn, the shop also carries fall bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and crocus, along with seeds from the local Annapolis Seeds line. Beyond seeds, the store stocks gardening and landscaping supplies, tools, fertilizers, pots, pest control products, grow lights and home products. The website's shop section is organised into seeds, supplies and lawn care. The company also supplies golf course equipment and gear for professional growers.
The company lists two retail locations: Halifax and Saint John, New Brunswick. The Saint John store, at 664 Rothesay Avenue, opened in 1957. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company closed its physical retail store and moved to online sales, and it also sold small greenhouse kits to homeowners. The Halifax Seed Catalogue has been published for more than 150 years, with editions listed from 1886 to 2026. The 2026 catalogue is available to download from the website, and the mailouts for it have finished. You can fill in a form on the website to request a print copy of the 2027 catalogue. Catalogues and seeds are shipped within Canada only.
In 2025, Halifax Seed partnered with the K.C. Irving Environmental Sciences Centre and the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens at Acadia University to help preserve two native plants, the Cutleaf Coneflower and the Joe-Pye Weed. As part of that partnership, a limited-edition seed sale sent C$1 from each sale to student research at the centre. The Halifax store is at 5860 Kane Street, Halifax, NS B3K 5L8. You can call (902) 454-7456 or email info@halifaxseed.ca. Opening hours are listed on the locations page of the website, so check there before you head out.
