Salt + Ash Beach House: Fire and Coastal Cooking

Salt + Ash Beach House brings a casual coastal feel to the Queen’s Marque district at 170-1741 Lower Water Street #170, overlooking Halifax Harbour. The 154-seat restaurant opened in February 2023 under Freehand Hospitality, and its setting is a big part of the experience: the dining room was designed by FRANK Architecture with teak bar tops, wood, beach stones and custom hanging-cord lights. Two surfboards from Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore add to the beach-house theme, while local granite forms part of the wood-fired hearth. The space feels built around that fire, rather than treating it as a small feature in the kitchen.

The menu combines coastal cooking with family-style, cookout-inspired dishes. Most of it uses the live fire in some way, including grilled and smoked meats, seafood, pizzas, vegetables, sauces and even desserts. A few good examples are the Fire-Roasted Scallops at C$24, Tuna Crudo Salad at C$26, Rum Maple Roasted Cod at C$27 and Lobster a la King at C$34. The Fire-Roasted Brussels Sprouts cost C$14 and are cooked directly on the coals, which gives them a more pronounced smoky flavour than a standard roasted side. Other options include the Beach House Cheeseburger for C$23, Fried Chicken Sandwich for C$19, Fish Chips for C$25 and 7oz Flank Steak for C$38. Larger plates range up to the 16oz Strip Loin at C$79, while vegetarian choices include Whole Roasted Cauliflower at C$30, Grilled Maitake Mushrooms at C$23 and Charred Greens Shaka Shuka at C$17.

There is also a pizza selection, with Margherita at C$19, Brothers Meats Pepperoni Plus at C$21 and Maritime Mushroom at C$22. Weekly specials follow a simple day-by-day format: Monday Meatloaf Melt, Tuesday Tacos, Wednesday Reuben, Thursday Lobster Roll, Friday Fish, Saturday Eggs Benedict and Sunday Quiche. Weekend brunch runs from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and lunch is served Monday to Friday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. For something sweet, the Coconut Cream Pie is C$11, the Fire-Roasted Pineapple Cake is C$12 and the 12 Layer Chocolate Cake is C$13. The bar focuses on local craft beer, cider, wine and cocktails, including “The Point,” a margarita-style drink, and a Manhattan.

Prices generally fall between C$20 and C$70 per person, although larger steaks and shared plates can push the bill higher. Salt + Ash is open daily from 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM, with Friday and Saturday service extending to 2:00 AM. Happy hour runs daily from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and again from 9:00 PM until closing. Late-night food is available until 11:00 PM Monday to Wednesday, midnight Thursday and Sunday, and 1:00 AM Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s Bonfire Bingo starts at 9:00 PM and includes five rounds, happy-hour pricing and a chance to reduce the bill by up to C$100.
