Blueberry season is underway across Nova Scotia, and from Halifax, a day trip into the Annapolis Valley can turn berry picking into a relaxed summer outing. The province has more than 40 U-pick farms and markets, with highbush blueberries generally available from late July or early August into mid-September. Since fields can close when berries are wet, it is sensible to check conditions before leaving.

At Blueberry Acres in Sheffield Mills, picking runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, through the season. The farm is at 1225 Middle Dyke Rd., and blueberries cost C$3.20 per pound; its boxes are C$1.25 each. Varieties include Blue Crop, Blue Ray, Bonus, Berkley, Duke, Jersey and Spartan. A one-litre bucket with a string or laces can be useful for picking, along with a larger container for the drive home. The farm accepts cash, debit, Visa and MasterCard. Pets are not allowed in the fields, although service animals are permitted, and a reserved area is available for visitors with reduced mobility. A nearby stop for raspberry picking is Vital Berry, at 366 Gibson Woods Rd. in Centreville, about two minutes from Blueberry Acres. Its raspberry season runs from mid-July to mid-September, with picking from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. six days a week; the farm is closed Wednesdays. Raspberries cost C$6 per pint, fibre containers are provided, and payment is cash only. The daily information line is 902-582-1482. Keeping both farms in the same plan gives you two different berries without adding much driving between stops.
For another Valley option, Reimer Gardens is at 2121 Black Rock Road in Waterville. In 2026, its U-pick operation runs on Saturdays and holidays until September 7, with hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Blueberries are C$3.50 per pint or pound, with the pint box included, while raspberries are C$4.50 per pint. A cardboard flat holding 12 pint boxes costs C$2.50. The farm also sells pre-picked raspberries for C$78 per flat, with quantity discounts available. If you want to add a different kind of farm stop, Dempsey’s Corner Orchards in Aylesford is open from June 1 to October 31 and offers U-pick, U-drop, wagon rides, a petting zoo and a tea room with home cooking. The orchard grows 12 varieties of cherries and 57 varieties of apples, along with seasonal vegetables such as squash, pumpkin, corn, potatoes, carrots, onions and beets. The seasonal theme continues beyond fresh fruit. At Lunenburg County Winery, also called Hackmatack Farm, in Newburne, visitors can pick blueberries, taste wines, picnic and take farm tours. The commercial highbush farm produces more than 28 wines and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday from May to October, with daily opening in August. Sugar Moon Farm in Earltown offers maple tastings and farm products year-round, including maple syrup, pancake mix and granola, although its summer 2026 hours are reduced and group tours require reservations. For a Halifax weekend plan, the practical approach is to choose one picking farm, confirm its hours and berry supply, then add one nearby treat or farm visit rather than trying to cover the whole province in one day.
