King’s Co-op Bookstore is an independent, student-owned bookstore on the University of King’s College campus in Halifax. It opened in 2006 after students wanted a more affordable way to buy required course texts, and it still operates as a cooperative: King’s students can purchase a lifetime membership for C$1. The shop sells course books for the Foundation Year Program, Journalism and King’s Honours Programs, along with stationery, King’s merchandise, fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels and creative gifts. It also offers flat-rate shipping of C$5 anywhere in Canada.

The location is part of the experience. You’ll find the store in the basement of the New Academic Building at 6350 Coburg Rd, Halifax, accessible by elevator. It sits along a hallway rather than in a conventional street-front shop, so it can be easy to miss if you do not know where to look. Its shelves are also unusual: they fold and lock into place, then are brought out each morning from a storage “cage” and put away again at closing. That practical setup gives the shop a compact, informal feel rather than the layout of a large bookstore.
King’s Co-op Bookstore is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As of August 28, 2026, those are the listed regular hours, so it is sensible to check the official website before going during a university break. The store is managed by Paul MacKay and also runs Bookings, a podcast hosted by MacKay and board member Jesse Hiltz.
