Agricola Street Books is an independent used bookstore, gift shop, and greeting card shop at 2684 Agricola Street in Halifax’s North End, between North Street and Almon Street, on the west side of the street. About 90% of the stock is used, with books coming mainly through community buybacks rather than wholesale orders. Customers can exchange suitable recent books for store credit, and the shop accepts titles for all ages in areas such as science fiction, history, self-help, and classics. It does not take magazines, textbooks, CDs, DVDs, vintage books, or books with water damage, yellowing, or dust. The online shop also offers new and used books, with shipping or in-store pickup available. Prices vary by title, but the focus is on affordable, carefully selected stock. Alongside books, you’ll find greeting cards, socks, puzzles, notebooks, small gifts, and gift cards.
The interior has natural light, original oak floors in the children’s room, antique stained glass, custom wooden shelving, and a two-storey hanging lamp. The children’s section is bright, with forward-facing books and views of the courtyard. The shop is family-friendly and welcomes dogs, though it is not wheelchair accessible because there are many stairs inside. Oona Craig founded the store after moving to Halifax with her husband, Nick, in 2015; Nick built the wooden shelves, and the name “Agricola” comes from the Latin word for farmer.
Regular activities include Book Buyback Weekends, held every other month, Stuff-a-Bag sales for C$10 plus tax, a book club, and a Reader Rewards Program. The store also supports local schools, Hope for Wildlife, Feed Nova Scotia, and Bide Awhile Cat Shelter. All sales are final, with limited exchanges for gifts, defective items, or damage reported within seven days.
