Recital of young British flautist Matthew Higham as part of the Westbourne Music series, performed at the Mackintosh Gallery.
Matthew Higham plays a flute recital at the Glasgow Art Club on Wednesday 14 October, from 1pm to 2pm. It's part of the Westbourne Music series, which the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland presents at the club's Mackintosh Gallery — a room designed and decorated by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, known for its charm and intimacy.
The programme runs through four distinct works. There's Henri Dutilleux's Sonatine for flute and piano, J.S. Bach's Sonata in b minor BMV 1030, Otar Taktakishvili's Sonata for flute and piano, and Paul Taffanel's Grande Fantasie on themes from the opera Mignon. It's a broad spread of repertoire, with the Bach sonata as a familiar anchor alongside the 20th-century writing of Dutilleux and Taktakishvili, and the late-19th-century virtuosity of Taffanel.
Higham is the Section Principal Flute of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and is regarded as one of Britain's outstanding young flautists. He started at The Purcell School for Young Musicians and has since played as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and St Martin-in-the-Fields. After studying in Cologne and Frankfurt, he held a position with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony before joining the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He's also a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, a tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and regularly appears as a guest with leading orchestras across Europe. He recently made his BBC Proms solo debut with Varèse's Density 21.5, which Bachtrack praised for its wealth of expression and haunting atmosphere.
