Historian Bettany Hughes brings the land of the pharaohs vividly to life in a talk at The Pavilion Theatre Glasgow.
Bettany Hughes brings her talk Uncovering Ancient Egypt to The Pavilion Theatre Glasgow on Monday 9 November, starting at 7.30pm. Hughes is an award-winning historian who's spent 25 years turning ancient history into storytelling, with more than 50 documentaries that have drawn 250 million viewers worldwide. Among her bestsellers are The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and Venus & Aphrodite.
In this talk, she sets out how Ancient Egypt's innovations in medicine, mathematics, engineering and governance laid the foundations of the modern world, and how Egyptian ideas of the afterlife, justice and leadership still shape us today. It's the kind of thing that makes a distant civilisation feel a lot closer to home than you'd expect. Stephen Fry once called her 'the most perfect tour guide I know', which gives you a fair idea of how she handles the material.
The Pavilion Theatre is a Glasgow institution in its own right. First built in 1904 as a music hall, it's one of the city's most loved variety venues, with an Edwardian façade, a grand marble-staircase foyer and an ornate auditorium that has hosted Laurel and Hardy, Judy Garland and Morecambe and Wise. It's a proper old-school theatre, and it's just as much a part of the night as what's happening on stage.
