A dance theatre piece that fuses documentary with movement to explore community resistance and solidarity, based on the 2021 Kenmure Street raid.
These Are Our Neighbours opens at the Citizens Theatre on Wednesday 14 October, running through to Saturday 17 October. It's a dance theatre piece by Katharine Williams, a RUPTURE production co-produced by Company of Wolves and Williams herself, in association with Bijli Productions.
The show revisits the attempted raid on Kenmure Street in 2021, when an entire community mobilised for eight hours to protect two people from deportation. It's a Glasgow story, and the piece was developed in collaboration with the community of Pollokshields, so the people it's about helped shape how it's told. Williams blends documentary with celebratory dance theatre, bringing together testimony, movement, music and light to look at that day and the people who stood their ground. It's recommended for ages 12 and over.
Williams wrote the piece and also wrote Miracle on Deanston Drive, so this sits within a wider body of work that looks at community and resistance. The way it's put together—mixing spoken testimony with dance and music—means it's as much about the atmosphere of the day as the facts of it, and the collaboration with the Pollokshields community keeps it rooted in the place it comes from.
