A 10-piece ska collective with a full horn section brings original material and classic ska/2 Tone tunes to McChuills.
The Dughoose Ska Band are back at McChuills Bar on Saturday 18 October, returning to the High Street for another night of ska. They're a ten-piece collective with a full horn section, so it's a fair few people on stage at once, and they describe themselves as Glasgow's high-energy ska outfit.
The set is split between two things: their own original material and the 2-Tone classics that sit at the heart of the ska tradition. The horn section is a big part of that sound, and having ten people involved means they can run the full brass section rather than relying on a few players. It's a return to the venue for them, too, so they're playing a room they've worked in before.
McChuills Bar, on High Street in Glasgow City Centre, has been running since 1993 as a pillar of the city's grassroots culture. It's more than just a pub — an institution and a community hub that's built its reputation as a place where live music isn't just a way to sell drinks. Bands and musicians are valued and given a platform here, and you don't have to pay to play or fit in with what's popular at the time; you're looked after and asked back even if you aren't packing them in. Alongside live bands, it stages electronic dance music club nights covering acid house, techno, disco and funk, and runs community-led programming like weekly life drawing classes, short film screenings, networking events and live sporting match broadcasts.
