A part gig, part social experiment bringing musicians together to make music as strangers, with no auditions or egos.
The Dep Sessions make their first live outing at The Record Factory on Thursday 29 October, after months of development. It's a new project described as part gig, part social experiment, and the whole thing is built around the idea of strangers coming together to make music. If you've ever wanted to play a song but didn't have a band to do it with, this is exactly the kind of thing that opens that door.
Here's how it works: musicians of any experience level sign up individually for a part in a song — vocals, guitar, bass, drums or keys. They pick a title from the setlist and learn it in the weeks before, then turn up on the night and play it live with a group of strangers. There are no auditions and no egos. Each song is chosen by community vote, and the line-ups are formed from whoever signs up, so every performance is unique to that night. It's a way for people who can play an instrument or sing but don't have a band to get on stage without needing to find one first.
Session One is the project's first live outing, and it's open to both the musicians who want to get involved and anyone who just wants to watch a room full of strangers become a band for one night. If you're a player, you can sign up for a part and learn your bit in advance; if you're not, you can just come along and see how it all comes together on the night. The whole thing is about getting people playing together who otherwise wouldn't have a reason to.
