A thought-provoking exhibition reflecting the creativity, joys and struggles of refugee communities in Glasgow, built from oral history and audio-visual work.
The Art of Family Life opens at Listen Gallery on Thursday 29 October and runs until Saturday 14 November. It's an exhibition built from oral history, audio-visual work and community gathering, and it looks at the creativity, joys and struggles of refugee communities who've settled in Glasgow. It's not something that came together overnight: the project was developed alongside community members over two years across the city, and it touches on intangible cultural heritage, belonging and listening.
There are two names behind it. The Scottish Oral History Centre at the University of Strathclyde and Listen Gallery worked together on the project, and the National Heritage Lottery Fund provided the funding. The exhibition also forms part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, so it sits within a wider programme of events running across the city.
If you haven't been to Listen Gallery before, it's a grassroots sound arts gallery and communal listening space in the Glasgow East End. They programme work focused on sound in all its forms, and they talk about improving listening practices and creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for people from all backgrounds. The space is step-free, which is handy to know before you head over.
