A special collections display celebrating the dark fairy tales of Arthur Rackham, featuring rare children's books and images from The Mitchell Library's Children's Collection.
The Mitchell Library is running a special collections display on the dark fairy tales of Arthur Rackham throughout October, from Thursday 1st to Saturday 31st. You'll find it on the Level 5 foyer, and it's a free drop-in, so no ticket needed.
Rackham is one of the great children's book illustrators, and his work is easy to recognise: that signature pen and watercolour style that brought classics like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Gulliver's Travels to life. He drew on the Pre-Raphaelites, the Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau, and this display gathers rare children's books and images from the library's own Children's Collection. It's put together by the Special Collections department, which is based up on the fifth floor.
The month closes with a related Hallowe'en session, 'Spooky Stories with Special Collections', on Saturday 31 October. Children and parents listen to stories illustrated by Rackham and then make their own spooky stories in a crafting session with badge making and drawing sheets. Spaces are limited to 25, so you'll need to book that one in advance.
