The UK's premier official Joy Division tribute act recreates the post-punk classics live at McChuills Bar.
Shadowplay are playing McChuills Bar on Friday 30 October, bringing their Joy Division tribute to the city centre. They're widely regarded as the UK's premier official Joy Division tribute act, and they've got the endorsement of founding member Peter Hook himself.
It's a set built around the post-punk classics, and they go about it with a fair bit of attention to the original sound. They use authentic vintage equipment to recreate the hypnotic intensity of Joy Division's live sets, rather than just playing the songs back. The whole thing is designed to capture the atmospheric power and visual presence of the original band, so it's as much about the mood as it is about the tunes.
Much of that comes down to the singing. The lead singer is Manchester-born and has earned a reputation for his vocal resemblance to Ian Curtis. He's performed alongside Peter Hook in Joy Division Orchestrated and took the lead role in the stage production New Dawn Fades, so he's spent a fair amount of time working within the orbit of the original band's legacy. The show itself is built around their acclaimed live set celebrating those post-punk classics.
