An immersive collaboration blending traditional Celtic music, electronic sound design, spoken word and poetry inspired by Shackleton's Antarctic expedition.
Seamus Egan and Maeve Gilchrist bring their collaboration Into the Ice to the Tron Theatre on Thursday 21 January 2027. It's a pairing of two musicians from different sides of the Irish Sea: Egan is a founding member of Solas and a long-standing figure in contemporary Irish music; Gilchrist is a Scots/Irish harper and composer who works across traditional and experimental styles.
The whole thing is built around the history and mythology of Antarctic exploration, and more specifically Ernest Shackleton's 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition. That's the moment when imagination, science and human ambition collided at the edge of the known world, and the two of them have reimagined that landscape through a shared lens of traditional Celtic music. They layer in electronic sound design, spoken word and poetry to build a sonic environment that moves between austerity and beauty, solitude and connection, and they describe it as an exploration of endurance, camaraderie and the human impulse to explore the unknown.
