Acoustic songwriting from Richard Shindell, an immigrant and emigrant crossing thresholds with his signature guitar style.
Richard Shindell plays Cottiers on Wednesday 18 November, with the show starting at 7:30 PM. He's an American songwriter who splits his time between New York's Hudson Valley and Buenos Aires, and that double life sits right at the heart of what he does. He writes from the perspective of both immigrant and emigrant, a crossing of thresholds that shapes his narrative songs about the human experience.
There's a fair bit of ground he's covered to get here. Originally from New York, he's lived in a Zen Buddhist monastery, busked the streets of Paris, and opened for Joan Baez, who later covered several of his songs. He's worked with Grammy winner Larry Campbell, who has played with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm and Elvis Costello, and in 1998 he teamed up with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky to record an album of covers under the name Cry Cry Cry.
He's a writer at heart, and that comes through in the way he inhabits characters in his songs. Among his acclaimed albums are Reunion Hill and Somewhere Near Paterson; Careless was recorded over three years between New York and Buenos Aires. His live shows are described as steeped in Americana storytelling and rich acoustic soundscapes, so it's a night that leans into the songwriting rather than the spectacle.
