Stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando, exploring time, place and gender, performed by RCS students.
Orlando opens at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on Tuesday 1 December, running through to Friday 4 December. It's a stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf's novel, and this particular version is Neil Bartlett's take on it. The production is performed by second-year BA Performance students and directed by Drew Taylor-Wilson.
If you're not familiar with the book, the story follows Orlando, who wanders across centuries and genders in a long stretch of self-discovery. Bartlett turns that into a playful, time-travelling journey through English history. The production is billed as an Odyssean coming-of-age epic, a surrealist dreamscape and a campy, anticolonial satire that opens onto a liberated queer utopia — and it's regarded as one of the greatest love letters of all time.
One of the more distinct things about this run is how it's put together. The storytelling is layered through British Sign Language, Visual Vernacular, spoken English and creative captioning, so the whole thing is accessible to a wide audience. It runs for two hours and thirty minutes, and it's recommended for ages 12 and over.
