A family-friendly day with stage fighting, falconry, medieval crafts, music and curator-led tours at The Burrell Collection.
The Burrell Collection is hosting Medieval Day! on Saturday 17 October, starting at 11:00am. It's a free drop-in event, so there's no ticket to book—you just turn up. The day is built around Battle At The Burrell - The Arc of War, a family-friendly mash-up of Shakespeare and pro-wrestling where Joan of Arc goes head-to-head with the arrogant Dauphin of France over who will lead their defence against the English. It's performed by History Riot and Stage Fighting Scotland, and it's the main thing on the bill.
That's not the only thing happening. There's a falconry display from Strathblane Falconry, medieval crafts, face-painting, and music from Gaita. The whole day is open to all ages, so it works as a family outing as much as a solo wander through the galleries. The curator-led tours are a good place to start, and they include visits to the secret stores, object handling, and stained-glass inspired crafts.
The Battle At The Burrell performance takes its cue from the collection's French exhibits, arms and armour, and it brings Joan of Arc to life. The rest of the day draws on the museum's wider medieval holdings, including the Burrell Tapestries. You're invited as 'Kings, Queens, Knights and Jesters' to step back into the Middle Ages, wander the galleries, and get to know the medieval objects in the collection. The curator-led tours, with their look at the stores and hands-on sessions, are part of that.
