Live performance of 'The Hill', Hamish Napier's album of new Strathspey airs, as part of the Celtic Connections 2027 programme.
Hamish Napier brings The Hill to The Barony Hall on Thursday 21 January, as part of the Fusion programme of Celtic Connections. It's the premiere of the fourth and largest instalment of his Strathspey Pentalogy, a five-album series celebrating his native Badenoch and Strathspey. This one centres on the mountains and braes that feed the River Spey, including the Monadhliath and the Cairngorms, and draws on local Gaelic hill names, folklore and heritage.
Napier is a flautist, pianist and singer, and he spent more than five years making the twenty-track album. It runs through thirty new airs and melodies, among them a full bagpipe pibroch and a Gaelic song in memory of his late grandfather. On the night, he'll be joined by fiddlers Iain MacFarlane, Seonaid Aitken, Megan Henderson and Patsy Reid, plus a rhythm section. He often weaves the story behind each tune together with evocative field recordings, so it's as much about the place as the music.
