Chicago blues guitarist Giles Corey brings rock, funk and slide guitar to Cottiers as part of his Born To Be Alone tour.
Giles Corey plays Cottiers on Tuesday 9 February, part of his Born To Be Alone tour. The Glasgow date is one of several stops on the run, and the night is built around Corey as the sole bill.
If the name is new to you, there's a bit of a double life to untangle here. Giles Corey is the folk-driven solo project of Dan Barrett, co-founder of Have a Nice Life and Enemies List Home Recordings. The self-titled debut came out in 2011 and started with a simple constraint: acoustic instruments only. From there it grew to include guitar, piano, ghostly choirs, heavy organ, field recordings and sudden walls of sound, all arranged around an intimate singer-songwriter core. The songs move through depression, death, history and the paranormal, and listeners often describe the experience in the language of ritual or religious experience.
But there's another side to the man behind the project. Barrett is also a Chicago-based blues guitarist, singer and songwriter with more than 25 years in the industry, having honed his craft alongside genre legends like Otis Rush, Magic Slim and Eddy Clearwater. His music blends traditional Chicago blues with funk, rock and slide guitar. Beyond his solo work recorded for Delmark Records, he's performed with the funk-rock group Lubriphonic, and with Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues and Mississippi Heat.

Between the two, you've got the folk-leaning, atmospheric work of the Giles Corey project and the seasoned Chicago blues of Barrett's other life. The Glasgow show is part of the Born To Be Alone tour, so it's a good chance to hear that particular side of things in the flesh. It starts at 7pm at Cottiers Theatre, 93-95 Hyndland Street in the West End, and tickets are £25.31.
