Charlie Cunningham and Scottish guitarist Sorren Maclean bring their acoustic folk music to the Mackintosh Church in the West End, as part of Celtic Connections 2027.
Charlie Cunningham and Sorren Maclean play Mackintosh Queens Cross on Wednesday 20 January, as part of Celtic Connections 2027. It's a double bill of two Scottish artists who usually work on their own, coming together for one night in the West End.
Cunningham's thing is a mix of fingerpicked nylon-string guitar, piano and intimate vocals. He's built a global following around songs that sit somewhere between melancholic and immersive, and he's got more than half a billion streams to his name. He's joined by Sorren Maclean, a Scottish guitarist, singer and composer whose 2025 album A Journey Looking Backwards is built on atmospheric folk and melodic songwriting. Together they're promising warmth, nuance and a bit of musical chemistry, with intricate acoustic textures, thoughtful arrangements and vocals from both. It's a night of two voices and two guitars rather than a full band.
The venue is one of Glasgow's hidden architectural gems: Mackintosh Queens Cross, the only church in the world designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Commissioned in 1896 by the Free Church, its Gothic windows still carry his spirit, with his characteristic floral motifs recognisable in the tracery of the large western window above the chancel. The building now houses a wide range of events for the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.
