A musical theatre production based on the 1980s film, staged by BA Musical Theatre students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
9 to 5 runs at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland from Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 December, staged by BA Musical Theatre students. It's based on the 1980s film of the same name, which starred Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and on an original idea by Fonda. The story follows three women, Violet, Judy and Doralee, who work in the office of a sexist, egotistical boss, Franklin Hart, and who join forces to kidnap him and turn the tables in order to challenge the misogyny of corporate America. It's billed as a celebration of courage, sisterhood and standing up for what you believe in.
The score is written by Dolly Parton, with music and lyrics by her and a book by Patricia Resnick. It's performed by an ensemble of actor-musicians, and the whole thing runs about 2 hours 30 minutes. The production is directed by Beth Wilkinson, choreographed by Lisa Darnell, and musical supervisor David Higham is on board too. It's a student production, so you're seeing the BA Musical Theatre class take it on.
There are a few content warnings to keep in mind: sexual harassment, misogynistic language, violence, use of guns onstage, loud noises, light drug use, mild profanity and comic sexual references. If any of that is a deal-breaker, it's worth knowing before you book.
