Indie pop artist Tyler Ballgame performs with singer-songwriter Johanna Samuels at Globe Hall.
Tyler Ballgame plays Globe Hall on Tuesday, October 20, with Johanna Samuels opening. Ballgame describes his work as alternative indie pop, and he traces the songwriting back to the 1960s and 1970s. He's also spoken about a concept of 'radical presence' in expression, which is a good way to frame the kind of attentive, song-focused set he's building toward.
He's set to release his debut full-length album, For The First Time, Again, produced by Jonathan Rado and Ryan Pollie. Rado is a name you might recognize from the Denver scene, and having him and Pollie behind the boards puts the record in a specific lineage of indie pop that values a clean, melodic line over anything too loud or cluttered. This show is one of the first chances to hear that material live.
Opening the night is Johanna Samuels, a singer-songwriter based in New York and Los Angeles. Her debut album, Excelsior!, came out in 2021, produced by Sam Evian and released by Mamabird Recording Co. It earned some strong notices, with NPR calling her voice 'brilliant.' Between her and Ballgame, the evening stays in the singer-songwriter wheelhouse, with two distinct voices sharing the bill.
