Concert by R&B and soul singer Sy Smith at the Dazzle venue in Denver, with two performance sets.
Sy Smith plays Dazzle on Friday, October 23, with two sets—one at 6:30 PM and another at 9:00 PM. She's an R&B artist who describes her work as progressive while rooted in tradition, and she carries a five-octave vocal range. She started in the late '90s singing background for Whitney Houston and has since worked with Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti and the Grammy-nominated group the Foreign Exchange.
After a brief stint signed to a major, she set up her own independent label and put out The Syberspace Social (2005), Conflict (2008), Fast and Curious (2012), and the entirely self-produced Sometimes a Rose Will Grow in Concrete (2018). She's widely regarded as a leading force in post-millennial indie soul.
Her 2024 album, Until We Meet Again, was produced by Zo! & Tall Black Guy and executive produced by Phonte Coleman. It's drawn comparisons to Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams, so that's the sound you'll be hearing live. The night is at Dazzle, a Denver venue that stages more than 70 shows a week, seven nights a week, and has been named one of the 'Top 120 Jazz Clubs in the World' by DownBeat since 2004.
