Concert by singer-songwriter Nathaniel Riley, a folk and americana artist from Fort Collins, Colorado.
Nathaniel Riley plays Skylark Lounge on Wednesday, October 14, at 7 PM. He's a singer-songwriter from Fort Collins, and the set falls into the folk and americana tradition—the kind of music that sits comfortably with a guitar and a voice.
Riley describes his approach simply: he writes and plays for the sake of the song. That's a good place to start, because it tells you where the focus is. His debut album, Bird Songs, came out in 2020 and was recorded with producer Darren Garvey. He pulled in a group of musicians for it, including Bridget Law on fiddle, Charlie Rose on banjo and pedal steel, and Steve Varney on banjo—three names you might recognize from Elephant Revival and Gregory Alan Isakov's band. The title track opens with a crash of sound that clears away to make room for lush acoustic textures, and the lyrics are personal and direct. It's a record that doesn't hide behind production, and that's the same spirit he brings to the stage.
When he's not writing, Riley spends his time fly fishing and hiking around his home area in Northern Colorado. It's the kind of background that fits right in with the folk and americana he plays—music that feels tied to the outdoors and the places it comes from. If you've spent any time with the Colorado folk scene, you'll recognize the sound he's working in.
