A jazz concert by the collective Cortex, led by Adrian Younge and J Rocc, within the Jazz is Dead series at the Ogden Theatre.
Cortex play the Ogden Theatre on Sunday, October 18, as part of the Jazz is Dead series. The show is presented by Jazz is Dead, the same outfit that's been bringing a steady stream of jazz and soul acts to Denver lately.
On stage, you'll find Adrian Younge and J Rocc. Younge is the producer and multi-instrumentalist who's spent years digging through crates and recording with a wide range of musicians; J Rocc is the DJ known for his work with the Beat Generator and his long history in the LA beat scene. Together, they've built a whole world around the Jazz is Dead project, blending live instrumentation with the kind of deep-cut digging that usually stays in the record store. The two of them handle the music from the ground up, so the set is as much about the production as it is about the performance.
If you've followed them, you know the sound: a mix of jazz, soul, and funk that feels like it could have come from a 1970s studio session, but with a modern beat sensibility. They've released a string of records under the Jazz is Dead banner, and this show is a live extension of that work. It's the kind of night that works whether you're there for the live playing or the DJ side of things, and it's a good chance to hear how the two of them lock in together.
