Interstices by Tom Riedel

Tom Riedel is showing Interstices at D'art Gallery East, 900 Santa Fe Drive, in the Santa Fe Arts District. The exhibition runs from September 24 through October 18, 2026. It's Riedel's third solo show at D'art, where he's been an artist member since 2024.

If you're not familiar with his work, Riedel is a Lakewood artist who's been making geometric, abstract art since the early 1980s. He showed at Pirate, Spark, and Emmanuel galleries in Denver back then, and had a two-person show at Stein's Gallery in 1984. Then he stepped away from making art from 1988 to 2020 to pursue higher education and a 25-year career as an academic librarian. Along the way, he earned a B.A. and M.A. in art history from the University of Colorado and an MLIS from the University of Texas. Since returning to his practice, his work has been shown at Core Art Space and Pirate Contemporary Art.

Interstices continues the approach he's been working with: hand-cut and layered pieces of illustration board and cardboard, painted with acrylic and reassembled like puzzle tiles into grids of color studies. The title itself points to the gaps or spaces between things, which fits the way he builds these pieces from separate, interlocking parts. D'art Gallery is a cooperative, artist-run contemporary gallery in Denver's Creative District on Santa Fe Drive, part of a wider umbrella that includes D'art 360 and D'art Satellite.
