Melbourne punk singer-songwriter Ecca Vandal performs live at Globe Hall.
Ecca Vandal plays Globe Hall on Saturday, October 10, as part of the tour for her album Looking for People to Unfollow. She's a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter who works in punk rock, and that's the sound the tour is built around. The set will draw from the new record, which serves as the framework for this run of dates.
There's a lot of ground she covers to get there. Born to a Sri Lankan family in South Africa, she moved to Australia as a child and trained as a jazz vocalist at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. That jazz background sits alongside a wide range of influences: soul, gospel, South African and South Indian music, and on the louder end, hardcore, d-beat and skaterock. She's cited Radiohead, Fugazi, Pixies and Bjƶrk as artists that have shaped her sound, and you can hear those different threads running through her work.
For Vandal, punk is more than just a style. She's spoken of it as a way to express herself against the boundaries of a strict cultural and religious upbringing, so the energy on stage comes from a personal place. The show is all ages, with ticketed guests under 16 admitted only with a ticketed guardian.
