Solo acoustic bluegrass performance by Chris Ryan Weist, frontman of Wood Belly, at Larimer Square.
Chris Ryan Weist plays a solo acoustic bluegrass set at Larimer Square on Saturday, October 10, starting at 4:30 PM. He's the frontman of Wood Belly, the Colorado newgrass ensemble, and this is a stripped-back version of that sound — just him and his instruments.
Weist didn't start with the mandolin. He picked up the drums at nine and the guitar as a teenager, and the mandolin came later, during his years as a ski bum. That's the instrument that eventually defined his writing. In 2013, he walked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine with a mandolin on his back, a journey he says shaped his lyrical voice and his songwriting. That same year, Wood Belly released their debut album, Steady Life, which brought a fresh take on bluegrass to both traditional and progressive audiences.
Coming from a full band, this solo acoustic set puts the focus on the songwriting and the mandolin. It's a different way to hear the material that Wood Belly has been playing together — just one voice and one instrument instead of the whole ensemble. If you've only heard them as a group, this is a good chance to hear where the songs come from.
