Concert by the Colombian psychedelic funk band Balthvs, presented by KGNU Radio, at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom.
Balthvs play Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom on Tuesday, October 20, with GIO Chamba opening. The show is presented by KGNU Radio.
Balthvs formed in Colombia in late 2019 and have since put out five studio albums, one live album, and twelve EPs. They've played in more than 26 countries and 98 cities across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Along the way, they've appeared at SXSW, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Electric Forest, Lightning in a Bottle, the Montreal Jazz Festival, SXSW Sydney, and Burning Man, and have been featured on KEXP, Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Cafe, and the BBC. They're billed as the biggest psychedelic band Colombia has ever produced, and they've racked up over 140 million streams.
Their sound pulls from a few different places: psychedelic funk, global grooves, Middle Eastern melodies, spiritual jazz improvisations, and Latin-tinged rhythms. It's a lot to fit into one set, and that's exactly why it works—the funk and the Latin rhythms keep it grounded, while the jazz and Middle Eastern influences pull it out in directions you don't always expect from a band coming out of Colombia.
