Jazz concert by Future History featuring Art Lande on piano, with Tim Wendel on guitar and Aaron Lande on violin and doumbek.
Art Lande's Future History Band plays Dazzle on Wednesday, October 14, at 7 PM. It's a trio featuring Lande on piano, Tim Wendel on guitar, and Aaron Lande on violin and doumbek. Over the last five years, Future History has built a repertoire rooted in jazz and classical Western music, with Middle Eastern influences and a strong commitment to free improvisation. Their debut recording, Escaping, showcases that technical side of the group.
The set draws from several places. There will be new compositions by Art, selections from Escaping, and a new piece by Aaron Lande that features him on doumbek. They'll also play Abdullah Ibrahim's "The Wedding" and "Reza," a Peruvian folk tune from the Lande/McCandless archives, with spontaneous compositions worked in between. It's a wide-ranging program that pulls from the group's recording and their live improvisation.
Art Lande is an internationally established performer, educator, and recording artist whose years with ECM (1973–93) left their mark. His son Aaron, former assistant concertmaster of the Greeley Philharmonic, studied Middle Eastern percussion and is also a respected chef in the Denver/Boulder culinary world. Tim Wendel earned his master's from CU, where he met Art; he released Westward You in 2022 and works with singer/songwriter Wellington Bullings, with deep ties to the Philadelphia jazz scene.
