Dr. Tracy Everbach explores the careers of women journalists who overcame barriers in 1960s American newsrooms, inspired by the Museum's special exhibition.
Dr. Tracy Everbach leads a talk on women in journalism at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on Thursday, October 15, from 6 PM to 7 PM. The session, Women in Journalism, Reporting for Change, looks at the women who broke through the barriers of American newsrooms in the 1960s and how their work changed the profession. Everbach builds the conversation around the careers of reporters whose persistence and commitment to public service opened doors for those who followed and influenced generations of journalists.
The talk takes its cue from the Museum's special exhibition, On Assignment: Dallas Times Herald 1963, which highlights the career of Vivian Castleberry. Castleberry's reporting and editorial leadership brought attention to issues that the mainstream press often overlooked, and her work serves as a starting point for the broader look at the era. It's a local story that fits the larger picture Everbach is painting.
Everbach knows the terrain from the inside. She's a professor of journalism at the University of North Texas and spent 14 years as a newspaper reporter, 12 of them at The Dallas Morning News. Along the way, she's picked up honors like the Carole Kneeland Award from the Texas Governor's Commission on Women. That mix of academic research and years in a newsroom is exactly what you want for a talk like this—someone who can talk about the history and the actual work of reporting with equal weight.

Tickets are $15, with discounted pricing for Museum members. Keep in mind that the ticket covers the talk but doesn't include Museum admission, so if you want to see the On Assignment exhibition before or after, you'll need a separate ticket for that. The talk runs from 6 PM to 7 PM at 411 Elm St. in downtown Dallas.
