Live screening of the 80s concert film URGH! A Music War with a presentation by The Professors Of Urgh, Chaki and Chris Slusarenko.
The Texas Theatre is screening URGH! A Music War on Friday, November 20, with a presentation by The Professors Of Urgh. The film is a concert movie from the early 80s that packs 34 bands into its running time, and it's often called one of the ground-zero documents of the late 70s and early 80s New Music scene. You'll see The Police, Devo, X, Joan Jett, and Gary Numan alongside underground names like Dead Kennedys, Magazine, The Cramps, Pere Ubu, Au Pairs, and Klaus Nomi.
The presentation comes from The Professors Of Urgh, which is just Chaki and Chris Slusarenko. They've hosted more than 55 episodes of a podcast about the film, interviewing artists like Lesley Woods of Au Pairs, Hugo Burnham of Gang Of Four, Stan Ridgway of Wall Of Voodoo, and Steve Bartek of Oingo Boingo, and digging into the secrets of the obscure band Invisible Sex. Slusarenko also hosts the Apple Music podcast Revolutions Per Movie and has played in Guided By Voices and Eyelids. Chaki is an LA-based electro-funk artist who has toured with El Vez and Fishbone and created the Punk Rock Graveyard Tour at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
