Exhibition of fine art photography by internationally acclaimed Tyler Shields, featuring an opening reception and book launch.
Tyler Shields is bringing a massive retrospective to Samuel Lynne Galleries in the Design District, and the opening reception is where the artist himself will be. The show, The Book, opens Saturday, October 17, with a reception from 6 to 9 PM, and the exhibition stays up through November 4.
Shields is a photographer and filmmaker whose work has spent years playing with the line between cinema and still photography. This show doubles as the launch for The Book, his first monograph in nine years. It's a 600-page volume that gathers 600 images from two decades of his career. You'll find provocative portraits, staged scenes, and previously unseen photographs that pull from cinema, fashion, fantasy, and American iconography. Seeing it in person gives you a sense of the sheer scale of the collection spanning twenty years of work—rather than just flipping through the pages at home.
If you've followed his work, you know he's always leaned into that cinematic feel, and this is the most comprehensive look at how that's evolved over time. The opening reception is the night to go if you want to see the artist in person; he'll be there to present the monograph and talk through the work. After that, the show remains open for a few more weeks, so you can still catch it if you can't make the Saturday night.
