The Firehouse Theatre presents Stephen Sondheim's darkly comic musical about revenge and obsession in Victorian London.
The Firehouse Theatre is bringing Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street to Farmers Branch, with preview night on Thursday, October 15, and opening night the following evening, Friday, October 16. The production runs through November 1.
If you're not familiar with the story, it's a darkly comic tale of revenge, obsession and love set in fog-shrouded Victorian London. After fifteen years of exile, Sweeney Todd returns with a razor in hand to settle the score with the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. Along the way, he teams up with Mrs. Lovett, the resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, whose kitchen provides a chilling culinary twist to his quest. It's a heavy story, but Sondheim's score keeps it moving.
Benjamin Keegan Arnold directs the production, with Rachel Davies handling music direction. Arnold describes the approach as playing it as both a thrilling horror story and a deeply tragic one, letting Sondheim's dark humor shine alongside the horror. If you're looking to make a full night of it, you can pair the show with dinner at the Bankhead Brewpub in Farmers Branch.
