Argentine dance company Social Tango Project blends dance, live music and projections to celebrate the power of human connection, with an impromptu tango lesson for the audience.
Social Tango Project comes to Moody Performance Hall on Friday, February 26, and Saturday, February 27, with both shows starting at 7:30 PM. It's an Argentine dance company that puts tango on stage by blending dance, live music, and projections, and the whole thing is built around the idea of human connection.
Ramón de Oliveira César and Agustina Videla founded Social Tango in 2012, and they've kept a consistent format since then: each show brings together around ten dancers and five musicians. The live music is a big part of it, and the projections run alongside the dancing. There's also a local element to the project—in every city they visit, they make room for the local tango community to join in. Pamela Tatge, writing for Jacob's Pillow, described it as a dazzling performance that puts talented Argentinian artists on stage alongside local tango dancers.
That local connection isn't just something that happens behind the scenes. The evening ends with the dancers inviting the audience up on stage for an impromptu tango lesson, so if you've never tried it, this is a chance to get a few steps in. If you're already a dancer, it's a good way to see how the professional company works.
