Theatre Three presents the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a virtuosic solo piece exploring survival and identity.
Theatre Three opens I Am My Own Wife on Thursday, October 15, and it runs through November 1. It's Doug Wright's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, and it's performed as a virtuosic solo piece—one actor on stage playing multiple roles throughout the evening.
The play tells the true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a woman who lived through some of the most turbulent decades of German history. It chronicles her survival, her identity, and her self-invention in the face of oppression from both the Nazis and the Stasi. The title itself comes from a legal document she once had to sign, and it points to the kind of life she built for herself across two very different regimes.

Because it's a solo show, the whole thing rests on one performer stepping in and out of different characters, which is a good part of the draw. It's less about a large ensemble and more about seeing one person carry the whole story on their own. The run starts on October 15 and continues through November 1 at Theatre Three in Dallas.
