Lyric Stage presents Godspell, a musical by Stephen Schwartz about friendship and community, opening its 2026-2027 season.
Lyric Stage opens its 2026-2027 season with Godspell, Stephen Schwartz's musical that retells the final days and teachings of Jesus through the Gospel of Matthew. It's a show built around a few well-known songsβ'Day by Day', 'Prepare Ye', and 'All for the Best'βand it carries a message of community, hope, and compassion. The production runs from October 16 through October 25, with the opening performance on Friday, October 16, at 8 PM.
This is a house debut for director Catherine Carpenter Cox, who brings a personal connection to the material: she performed in the show's 2000 Off-Broadway revival. That first-hand experience should give her a particular handle on how the piece works from the inside. Hans Grim is the musical director, and the two of them will be shaping the production together.
Lyric Stage has been Dallas' premier musical theatre company since 1993, and Godspell is how they're kicking off their new season. If you're familiar with the show, you know it's more of a collection of parables and songs than a traditional linear plot, so it's the kind of thing that works well as a starting point for a new year of theater.
