Multisensory exhibition by Echo Morgan expanding on her 2024 performance painting at the Crow Museum.
Echo Morgan is showing The Rainbow My Mother Shows Me at the Crow Museum of Asian Art through Sunday, October 11. It's a multisensory exhibition that takes its title from a 1990s song by Hong Kong singer Faye Wong.
The whole thing grows out of a 2024 site-specific performance Morgan first staged here, You Don't Always See a Rainbow After Rain. Over six days, she used her hair as a brush to paint onto a scroll-like canvas that she carried through the museum's indoor and outdoor spaces. Each day she layered a new color in a one-hour performance, and each one was tied to a personal memory of her parents. Those performances combined spoken word, song, and body painting.
This exhibition expands that performative painting into an immersive, multi-sensory experience built from photography, video, painting, and ephemeral materials. It takes the work from those six days and builds it out into a full room you can walk through, rather than a performance you watch.
