Lecture by Dr. Alan Northcutt on art documenting environmental collapse, part of the Hang Dallas series.
Dr. Alan Northcutt takes the stage at Times Ten Cellars on Wednesday, October 7, for a talk titled Climate Change is already in the Art. It's part of the Hang Dallas series, and the whole evening is built around one question: how are artists documenting environmental collapse in real time, through the work being made and shown today?
Northcutt isn't coming at this from a traditional art history background. He's a retired pathologist and the founder of Waco Friends of Climate, and he's been organizing annual climate art exhibitions across Texas since 2017. That's where the talk gets its legsβhe's not just talking about the concept of climate art in the abstract, but drawing on years of actually putting these shows together and seeing what artists are producing right now. The focus is on the work being made and shown today, rather than looking back at how art has handled nature in the past.
It's a tight schedule, so you'll want to be on time. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and Northcutt takes the floor at 7 PM. He'll hold the floor for about 45 minutes, with questions following around 7:45 PM, and the whole session wrapping by 8:30 PM. If you've got questions about the intersection of art and the climate, that's your window.
